AI in Content Creation: Strategic Partnership, Not Replacement
Is AI a friend or foe for marketers?
As AI continues to reshape the content landscape, many marketers find themselves caught between two concerns: some fear AI-generated content will hurt performance or brand perception, while others worry they’re falling behind by not using it enough.
In my experience, the key isn’t avoiding AI or blindly embracing it, but finding the right way to use it in collaboration with human expertise.
In Good to Great, Jim Collins writes about the importance of having the right team in place for long-term business success. We need to get the right people on the bus and in the right seats, he says.
This advice applies perfectly to human-AI content collaboration in today’s fast-paced business world.
In my experience, the right roles on the content creation bus are:
AI as a hyper-efficient, hyper-productive “team” of talented junior writers and researchers.
The human as a seasoned editorial director, guiding AI with strategic thinking, a strong grasp of editorial nuance, voice, and tone, and a deep awareness of and empathy towards the intended audience.
By blending human expertise with AI’s efficiency, we can create content at high velocity that’s not only high-quality but also strategically aligned with business goals.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions I get about using AI in content creation.
How do you use AI to generate content?
I use AI to enhance creativity, improve efficiency, and quickly produce high-quality content. While I collaborate with AI to generate ideas, structure content, and refine drafts, the final product always reflects my strategic thinking and aligns with the brand’s voice. I review and edit AI-generated drafts to maintain originality, tone, and quality. For example, if an AI draft lacks the brand’s voice or comes across as impersonal, I’ll inject relevant, relatable anecdotes or adjust the tone to align with our audience’s expectations. My goal is to create content that drives business results, and AI enables me to do this faster while maintaining quality.
Will your content be detectable as AI-generated?
AI tools assist in content creation, but I ensure the final product feels authentic and engaging by reviewing and editing each draft. Like an editorial director overseeing a writing team, I take an active role in shaping the content to align with the brand’s voice and meet high-quality standards. For instance, if an AI draft feels overly formal or robotic, I revise it to sound more conversational and approachable, making sure it aligns with our brand’s tone and engages the target audience. While some AI-generated content might be flagged, my focus is on producing high-quality content that aligns with business objectives, prioritizing readability and originality.
Will AI-generated content be penalized by search engines?
AI-generated content is not penalized by search engines as long as it’s high quality. I focus on producing original, relevant, and valuable content that is tailored to the audience and optimized for SEO. AI helps me streamline the creation process, but the final product meets SEO best practices and aligns with business objectives.
Isn’t AI-generated content stiff and unnatural, and less engaging and impactful?
Not all AI-generated content is the same. The quality of content depends on the human-AI collaboration. While AI streamlines the process, it’s the human input that ensures the content is engaging, relevant, and aligned with business goals. I use my editorial expertise to guide AI-generated drafts, shaping them to match the brand’s voice and ensuring clarity, tone, and audience engagement. My involvement ensures that the content resonates with readers and drives business outcomes. By combining human creativity with AI efficiency, the content I produce meets high-quality standards and aligns with business objectives.
Are you worried that AI will replace human content strategists and writers?
The landscape is evolving rapidly. When AI became mainstream a few years ago, I wouldn’t have considered it a full collaborator on my marketing team. But today, I’m amazed by how much I can accomplish as a senior-level individual contributor with AI as a part of my "team." Do I think AI will eventually gain enough skills to replace my strategic and editorial expertise? It's possible. But for now, the relationship is complementary. AI enhances my efficiency, while my experience ensures that content is strategic, high-quality, and audience-focused.
